With a display of produce, prepared foods like tamales, and vendors ranging from bakers to garden suppliers, this is one of our favorite Saturday destinations, too.

Cherry Creek Farmer’s Market
One of the Ten Best Bets For “Slices of Life,” Denver

Cherry Creek Farmer’s Market offers not only fresh melons, corn, peaches and other locally-grown produce, but it also delivers live music, homemade tamales and other unexpected treats. You’ll certainly run into local folks at the expansive market and see what tempts and draws them when homegrown goods are at the ready. The open-air market is centrally located at the corner of First Avenue and University.

City Park Esplanade

A relative secret compared to its behemoth sister at Cherry Creek, City Park’s farmers’ market features all the same vendors as big sis (farmers from Saturday’s CC market head to CP on Sundays). But (secret!) there’s half the crowds. We like that there’s more room to roam with dogs, strollers, and little ones in tow. Afterward, take your newfound goodies across the street and have a picnic in the park. Next to East High School, Colfax and 17th avenues.

You can always count on Cherry Creek’s market for hot kettle corn and (our farmers’ market fave) fresh-made tamales. What it lacks in ambience (it’s in the parking lot in front of Bed, Bath & Beyond) it makes up in accessibility (it’s in the parking lot in front of Bed, Bath & Beyond). Cherry Creek Shopping Center, First Avenue and University Boulevard.

Smaller and less crowded than the market that takes over the Cherry Creek Bed, Bath & Beyond parking lot on Saturdays, the Colorado Fresh Market is held on Sundays from June through October. It’s the same zany mix of Colorado honey, Western Slope apples, goat cheese and cinnamon rolls, but at a far less frenetic pace. Here an organic farmer from Paonia will take the time to tell you just how he makes apple cider, and a local baker will serve you a piping hot baguette right out of the oven. Many of these merchants gave up their day jobs to indulge their love of food, and they’re happy to share their stories. Bring a lawn chair and your appetite.

Best Place to Shlep Around on A Saturday
Cherry Creek Farmers’ Market

There’s no better way to waste a Saturday morning than wandering around the Cherry Creek Farmers’ Market. Every weekend from May through October, the Bed, Bath & Beyond parking lot becomes a great place to stock up on fresh legumes and fruits harvested by local growers. If you haven’t had breakfast, you can fill up on breads and pastries sold at the many food stands and perk up with a power shake or coffee. Don’t leave without a bouquet of wildflowers, the perfect reminder of how you’ve lazed away half the day.

Not your daddy’s farmers’ market. Fancy pasta, fresh flowers, scrumptious baked goods, and, of course, fruits and veggies bursting at the peak of flavor. Not enough old, beat-up trucks around to feel like you’re back on the farm, but the pickings are just as good. Open Saturdays 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May through October and Wednesdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June through September. First Avenue and University Boulevard (in the Bed, bath and Beyond Parking lot).

Sure, there are other farmers’ markets — and there’s not a darn thing wrong with any of them — but we like this one because of where it is: on East High’s esplanade, a patch of green in the heart of the city. It’s not too big or too small and, twenty minutes after you’ve arrived, you can walk away, arms laden with a humongous mélange of fancy produce so fresh you have to wipe off the dew: delicate organic pear tomatoes bursting with sugar, crunchy cukes, firm jalapeños, a crusty baguette just a few hours out of the oven, a sack of juicy Colorado peaches — and money left in your pocket.
